But wait! Are big farmers unnecessary or unwanted? NO!
By stating these aforementioned facts, we are not saying that we dislike large animal or crop farmers. We are not saying that large farmers don't care about the land or their animals. Most farmers dearly love their animals and their land and care for it the best way they know. This world, as it is, needs both large and small farmers, those who farm organically and those who farm non-organically. In order to feed the U.S. population (and provide the large amount of exported food to needy people in other parts of the world), and because the number of farmers in the U.S. is decreasing rapidly, we need large farms and farmers which can produce a large amount of food with a minimum amount of labor. Unfortunately, because of city and general population expansion into the countryside and rural areas, farms are being squeezed out. This is another reason we need large crop farmers: because they can and are learning to produce larger and larger amounts of food from smaller and smaller areas.
